How can I create a linked governance process for a material and its Bill of Materials (BOM) in SAP MDG Central Governance?

SAP describes five integration patterns for linked Material and BOM governance: PLM + MDG for Material, a simple BOM in an enhanced MDG Material model, a post-activation BOM step, a Material CR that triggers a follow-up BOM CR, or a BOM CR that triggers Material CRs for missing components. The right choice depends on BOM complexity, governance sequence, PLM usage, and available release/extension scope.

SAP does not provide one universal BOM-in-MDG design here. Instead, it presents five linked-governance patterns, from a simple BOM inside an enhanced MDG Material process to follow-up or dependent change-request flows between Material and BOM. The best option depends on BOM complexity, release scope, and whether Material and BOM should be governed together or in separate approvals.

Process flow

  1. Start with the business requirement for linked Material and BOM governance.
  2. Determine BOM complexity, governance sequence, PLM integration, separate approval needs, and release scope.
  3. Choose one of the five SAP-described approaches.
  4. For simple BOMs, extend data model MM and model the BOM using Entity Type 1 with an own access class or Entity Type 4 with BAdI MDG_BS_MAT_API_SEGMENTS_EXT.
  5. For post-activation maintenance, continue the Material CR workflow after activation and add a BOM maintenance dialog step.
  6. For Material-to-BOM linkage, activate the Material first and automatically create a follow-up BOM CR.
  7. For BOM-to-Material linkage, create dependent Material CRs for missing components and activate Materials before BOM.
  8. Validate the selected design against the referenced How-To Guide, SAP Notes, SAP Help, or Utopia extension.
