How to maintain multiple materials with SAP MDG?
SAP MDG-M supports multiple-material processing through several options: MATA, File Upload, Multiple-Record Processing, MDG Consolidation, MDG Mass Processing, Data Import Framework, SOA Product Service, MM17, and direct input/BAPI/ALE. Choose based on create vs. change, governed staging vs. direct active-area loading, record volume, entity scope, and whether error tolerance is needed.

SAP MDG-M does not have one single mass-maintenance path for every case. The source guide recommends choosing the process by first deciding whether you need create or change, then whether data must go through governance/staging or can be written directly to the active area, and finally by record volume, entity scope, and error-tolerance needs. For example, MATA is used for several materials in one governed change request, File Upload is entity-oriented, Multiple-Record Processing is suited to smaller record sets, and Data Import Framework can continue despite blocked or erroneous records.
Process flow
- 1. Determine whether the requirement is create or change.
- 2. Decide whether governance/staging is required or whether direct active-area processing is allowed.
- 3. Determine the number of records and whether one or multiple entity types are involved.
- 4. Review the applicable SAP Notes for functional restrictions and release information.
- 5. Select the processing option: MATA, File Upload, Multiple-Record Processing, Consolidation, Mass Processing, Data Import Framework, SOA Product Service, MM17, or Direct Input/ALE.
- 6. For File Upload, ensure one entity type per upload and load all dependent entity files into the same change request.
- 7. For Data Import Framework, prepare IDoc-XML and choose Governance only if staging is required.
- 8. Execute the chosen process and monitor validation messages and workflow steps where applicable.
