How do I maintain SAP MDG value mapping via file export and import?

Use value mapping to map system-internal code values to values in a global or system-specific code list, then mass maintain the mappings by exporting XML with MDG_EXTR_FPM_CMP, editing the XML, importing it with MDG_FILE_UPLOAD_CMP, and verifying the result in MDGIMG. The guide applies from MDG 7.0 and SAP S/4HANA 1511.

Use value mapping to map system-internal code values for a customizing element to an external code list, then mass maintain the mapping by exporting it to XML, enriching the XML, importing it back, and verifying the result in MDGIMG. The guide applies from MDG 7.0 and SAP S/4HANA 1511.

Process flow

  1. Confirm prerequisites and business-agreed mappings.
  2. Open MDGIMG and go to General Settings > Value Mapping > Maintain Value Mapping.
  3. Create or verify the initial mapping relationship for TABL / MDG_BS_MATERIAL_INDUSTRIAL_SE1.
  4. Create the initial code mappings in Define Value Mapping.
  5. Start MDG_EXTR_FPM_CMP and export the value mapping as XML.
  6. Edit the XML in an XML-capable text editor and add or modify CodeMapping entries.
  7. Start MDG_FILE_UPLOAD_CMP and import the edited XML.
  8. Review the import log and verify the mapping back in MDGIMG.

Example XML CodeMapping entry from the guide

The source shows the following entry for adding a new mapping in the exported XML. Use the XML exported from your own system as the baseline, because the guide notes inconsistencies between screen values, prose, and XML representation.

1<CodeMapping> 2 <InternalCode>1P</InternalCode> 3 <ExternalCode>005</ExternalCode> 4 <InMapDefault>/</InMapDefault> 5 <OutMapDefault>/</OutMapDefault> 6</CodeMapping>
