Can SAP MDG and IS-OIL run in the same system, and what is the implementation architecture?

Yes. The guide’s approach is to run SAP MDG and IS-OIL in one system by activating both sets of business functions, extending the standard MDG data models and structures with IS-OIL fields, adapting UI/mappings/replication, and then validating Material, Supplier, Customer, and downstream Oil & Gas processes end to end.

Use the standard MDG extensibility framework to govern IS-OIL master data in one system: activate the required MDG and Oil & Gas business functions, extend the relevant MDG data models and API/structure layers, expose the fields in MDG UIs, and configure IS-OIL-specific replication before validating Material, Supplier, Customer, procurement, and sales scenarios.

Process flow

  1. Confirm the target SAP release and applicability.
  2. Review SAP Note 1688458 for ECC or 2392135 for S/4HANA.
  3. Activate the required IS-OIL and MDG business functions in the same system.
  4. Extend the MDG data model for the governed object area.
  5. Extend the corresponding MDG and API structures.
  6. Regenerate the data model-specific structures.
  7. Extend and verify the UI and change structures.
  8. Extend mappings between staging and active areas. Configure business activities and UI actions. Configure replication using IS-OIL-specific IDoc types. Validate Material, Supplier, Customer, procurement, and sales scenarios end to end.
